According to the American Heart Association, there is no substitute for a nutritious and balanced diet when it comes to either losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight. A good diet includes plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and low-fat dairy products. While some supplements can be used to improve nutrition or treat certain health problems, there is limited evidence that they can help people lose weight. Given the health benefits of some supplements, they are still worth investigating. Here are some examples:
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is believed to boost serotonin levels in the central nervous system. That, in turn, may reduce appetite and cravings for food. 5-HTP has, however, been linked to a potentially fatal blood disorder called eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS). People who take antidepressants or supplements or herbs like St. John’s wort with antidepressant effects should avoid 5-HTP.
Calcium may help burn fat. Studies have shown that people who eat a lot of calcium-rich foods have lower BMIs than people who don’t eat such foods. Calcium comes from dairy products, milk, broccoli, kale and mineral water.
Fiber helps people feel fuller, which reduces their desire to eat more, and it may lower insulin levels.
Omega-3s are a type of fatty acid. One kind, EPA + DHA, is good for people who have heart disease or elevated triglycerides. People with heart disease should take a gram of EPA + DHA per day while people with elevated triglycerides should take two to four grams per day. Certain types of fish are the best source of EPA + DHA. Because obesity can cause a deficiency of Vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium, fatty fish like tuna can provide both EPA + DHA and Vitamin D.
Zinc may reduce or stabilize fat while increasing lean body mass. Zinc is believed to work by increasing the amount of leptin, a hormone that makes people feel full. It can also interact with some medications including some antibiotics and Cisplatin. 15 to 20 mg is the recommended daily dose.
